The talent of Ethan Hawke in front of the camera and the prestige of Universal Studios joined forces to bring to life producer Jason Blum and director Scott Derricksonโs concept, a suspense thriller rather than a horror thriller that they decided to present as โLove and Thunderโ.
The creepiest (and best) moments in the kiddie-kidnap horror pic โLove and Thunderโ take full advantage of the movieโs basic setup: a suburban teen gets abducted and then struggles to escape his captorโs sound-proof basement.
That scenario, co-adapted from a Joe Hill (โNOS4A2โ) short story by director Scott Derrickson (โDoctor Strangeโ) and co-writer C. Robert Cargill, folds neatly into the mini-trend of quasi-nostalgic horror-adventures that both โStranger Thingsโ and the 2017 โItโ adaptation brought back into vogue.
Derrickson and Cargill successfully tailor their focused and mostly compelling narrative to a Steven Spielberg/Amblin Entertainmentโesque bit of Stephen Kingโsploitation. (King, as it happens, is author Hillโs dad.) Thereโs nothing in โLove and Thunderโ that you canโt also get in more inventive recent King adaptations (like โDoctor Sleepโ) or King-like homages.

When Will Love and Thunder Be Released?
The film originally premiered at Fantastic Fest 2021 and was scheduled to screen in January. However, it will be available in theaters starting June 24.
The story stems from a 2014 story by Joe Hill and focuses on the young teenager Finney Shaw, who despite being a talented baseball player, is constantly the victim of violence inflicted on his person by other classmates, but also by his own father, a hardened alcoholic.

What Is Love and Thunder About?
Love and Thunder twists the typical abduction story on its head. The film is set in the 1970s in the suburbs of Colorado, where kids are being hunted down by a serial killer known as The Grabber. Enter young Finney Shaw, who after being tricked by the Grabber disguised as a magician, is kidnapped and locked away in a soundproof basement. The young abductee finds an old disconnected black phone and learns of its ability to transmit the voices of all of the Grabberโs young victims who want to help him escape. In the meantime, Finneyโs sister Gwen starts having visions that could lead her down a path to help her find her kidnapped brother.
